Carpenters make endorsements in Essex commissioner race

The Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters endorsed party-backed candidates for Essex County commissioner seats on Thursday, Executive Secretary-Treasurer William Sproule announced.

The union endorsed Verona Councilwoman Christine McGrath, Livingston Mayor Shawn Klein, incumbent Wayne Richardson, and West Orange Democratic Municipal Chairman Abdur R. Yasin for the at-large seats. All four are party-backed and endorsed by Gov. Mikie Sherrill.

“These candidates recognize that when labor succeeds, Essex County succeeds,” Sproule said. “They understand the importance of investing in infrastructure, supporting apprenticeship and workforce development programs, and ensuring that working men and women have a seat at the table. We are confident they will work collaboratively to continue building a stronger, more prosperous Essex County for everyone.”

The four at-large candidates face two challengers: Newark Public Schools Advisory Board member Marques Aquil Lewis and Maplewood Township Committeewoman Deborah Engel. They finished sixth and eighth in the Essex County Democratic Convention, respectively. Several others have dropped out of the race.
