Voters will pick Stearns County commission replacement in special election

ST. CLOUD — Stearns County Commissioner Leigh Lenzmeier retired from the board on Wednesday amid a legal battle over his mental fitness.

"I realize today, it is the right thing for me, my family, the Board and the residents of my district and Stearns County as a whole," Lenzmeier, 77, wrote in the letter, which was submitted to county officials on Wednesday.

His retirement from the board was effective immediately, according to Michael Pepin, Lenzmeier’s attorney. The decision was part of negotiations during a Wednesday morning guardianship hearing in Wright County, Pepin told St. Cloud LIVE.

The Wednesday hearing was to determine if Lenzmeier’s wife, Alice Lenzmeier, would keep the emergency guardianship granted to her at the beginning of the month.
