Massachusetts is going to build a wildlife crossing over Interstate 90.

Massachusetts just got some federal money that will help protect wildlife from being hit by cars.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) announced a $1.7 million grant award to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) "to fund pre-construction activities for a wildlife crossing project along the Appalachian Trail over Interstate 90 in the western part of the state," according to a release.

The Bay State is one of 16 grant recipients to receive funding for wildlife crossing projects nationwide.

“Too many Americans are injured or killed each year in crashes involving cars and wildlife, especially in rural areas – which is why our department created the first-ever program dedicated to crossings that make roads and highways safer for both humans and wildlife,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a written statement.

Where will the wildlife crossing be built in Massachusetts?

They really work, we have several out in the western states and they make a big difference. Glad to see they are considering them in the east. There should be three or four of them up on Snowshoe in Pennsylvania on the Interstate.

Lots of places where those would be really helpful.

They make underpasses too. I remember when they first came into being back in the late 1900/early 2000. The Craighead group, can't remember exactly which term they used then, and speaking with Lance Craighead, son of one of the famous twins, about it. At that time, I think it was the first one, was along US30 in Wyoming near a national monument. There's one up on the pass near me on I90 and I know of a few on US93 north of Wells, NV. Those are the ones I've seen over the years but I know there are many more.

They should also go over some railroad tracks.

They started around here and are part of some program or other already. Eastern states have hardly begun to make use of them so this is good that the bulk of funding goes to states in the east to start dealing with the problem.

I see that several locations in the west are getting funding, but they are all on mountain passes* that need them. I'm disappointed that nothing is going on in PA where there should be three on Snowshoe Pass alone!

*I know because I've been over every one of them more than once.

Directional signs are posted in Deerma and Raccoonin. There is a sub-sign using the N.J. dialect of Foxan. Nothing for the N.J. Black Bears.
