Salina voters hear arguments on pit bull ban ahead of special election
SALINA, Kan. (KAKE) — Salina voters heard arguments both for and against the city’s pit bull ban Tuesday night during a public forum held as the community prepares for a special mail-in election next month.
A couple dozen people attended the forum at Salina Area Technical College, where speakers discussed the long-standing ordinance and encouraged voters to research the issue before casting their ballots in the Feb. 24 election.
Salina’s pit bull ban was enacted in 2004, following a serious dog attack the year before. The ordinance makes it illegal to own or keep pit bulls within city limits unless the dog was registered before the law took effect.
Kansas state director for Humane World for Animals, Midge Grinstead, spoke in favor of repealing the ban, arguing that breed-specific laws unfairly target dogs based on appearance rather than behavior.
