July 5 (UPI) -- Three people were stabbed and at least 16 others were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries following Fourth of July fireworks at Chicago's Navy Pier, police said.
The stabbing occurred Thursday following an "altercation" while the more than a dozen people hospitalized were injured in a stampede to the pier's exit, Chicago Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement.
Chicago Police spokesman Rocco Alito told NBC Chicago that the stampede occurred as people were exiting the venue when someone yelled there was a shooting.
But there was no shooting, he said, adding that reports a person was shot are not accurate.

(14,833 posts)It's sad he stabbed 3 and injured a bunch and I can't help thinking what carnage he would have wrought if he had a semi auto rifle.. If a whack job is gonna do something stupid keep it on the low side of lethal..

(18,402 posts)The injuries occurred when a false rumor started (possibly induced by someone setting off a firecracker) as people were leaving. There was panic and a stampede, and that is how the injuries occurred.
Its two separate stories.

(14,833 posts)I stand corrected in light of new information. It still does not negate the fact that an AR-15 would have done more damage than a knife if it did happen.. yes?
As the military likes to say, it's a "force multiplier"
