WASHINGTON — Downtown D.C. will come to a standstill this upcoming week as the nation bids farewell to former President Jimmy Carter, with road closures and detours planned for his state funeral.

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), in collaboration with federal agencies, has announced a series of road closures and heightened security measures for the event, which has been designated a National Special Security Event (NSSE). The funeral proceedings will span from Tuesday, January 7, through Thursday, January 9, 2025.

Here’s what you need to know:

Key events:

• Tuesday, January 7:
-- President Carter’s remains will arrive at Joint Base Andrews and be escorted to the U.S. Navy Memorial on Pennsylvania Avenue NW.
-- A public funeral procession will occur from the Navy Memorial to the U.S. Capitol in the afternoon.
-- Carter will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda from Tuesday evening through Thursday morning.

• Thursday, January 9:
-- The state funeral will take place at the Washington National Cathedral, followed by dignitary escorts and rolling road closures.
