BIG COLD coming next week. Will BIG SNOW follow?
The cold will pour into the Mid-Atlantic late this coming week. That could set the stage for winter storminess the following week but it's WAY too early to be buying into the posts on social media hyping huge storm potential and showing model runs of storms 10 or more days into the future.
Yes, the pattern may turn favorable for snow after around Jan 6 or 7 and esp in the Jan. 9 to 12 window, but it's way too soon to know whether storms will take favorable tracks to deliver meaningful snow here. We can remember many times when the pattern for snow looked great at long ranges and did not deliver. So if you're in the "I'll be believe when I see it" camp, we're right there with you.
We are confident it will turn quite cold and that the cold will last into at least mid-January. You definitely need the cold for it snow. So if you're a snow lover, there are encouraging signs but we won't have confidence in any winter storm potential until 3 to 5 days before a storm. About 5 to 8 days out, we can starting analyzing scenarios. So stay tuned for more updates when credible winter storm scenarios emerge.
