Thursday was a late night for lawmakers on the Senate Judiciary Committee, who didnt vote on a firearm regulation bill until around 11 p.m.
Senate Bill 21-78 would create reporting requirements for Colorado gun owners whose firearms are lost or stolen. If someone did not tell law enforcement about their firearm being lost or stolen, within five days of learning it was gone, the person would be guilty of a petty offense and required to pay a $25 fine.
The offense would become a class 3 misdemeanor if the person failed to report firearm loss or theft more than once. Such a crime entails a jail sentence of up to six months, a fine of up to $750, or both.
SB-78 which passed the committee by a vote of 3 to 2 is sponsored by Sens. Sonya Jaquez Lewis of Boulder County and Jessie Danielson of Wheat Ridge, both Democrats. It aims to reduce gun violence caused by people using lost or stolen firearms.

(26,990 posts)Honestly, all guns should be registered. And if your registered gun shows up as being used in a crime, you get to be just as responsible as whoever used it if you did not report it stolen.
I'm so tired of things like, "Toddler pulls gun from mom's purse, shoots and kills mom" kind of stories that demonstrate all too clearly how recklessly irresponsible too many gun owners are.
Dear lord, it should be at least as hard to get a gun license as it is to register and vote in some states.

(26,990 posts)I must remember that.
Despite my screen name, I'm a woman, and while I am long past menopause, abortion is a huge issue for me. I think what angers me the most is that those who are most willing to ban abortion are also least willing to provide birth control ahead of the fact, and have zero interest in supporting pregnant women in all the ways they need to be supported.

(54,770 posts)fail to report and the gun is used in a violent crime and there is evidence the gun was not properly secured. Imprisonment should be an option. Further, they cannot own gunz with unannounced searches.
If the gun was sold without a background check through an FFL, big fine and criminal charges.
Almost every gun used in a crime was first purchased legally. It was either stolen, transferred to the criminal often for a fistful of cash without a background check, or the mythical responsible gun owner used it in a crime.
Weve been coddling gun-strokers too long.
