Marin elections office begins recount in supervisorial election

Marin County election officials began to manually recount ballots Wednesday in the race for Novato’s seat on the Board of Supervisors.

Andy Podshadley, who finished second in the District 5 election on June 2, requested the recount. He also asked for more information from the elections office so he could direct it to recount the ballots in the most cost-efficient order. By state law, Podshadley can specify by precinct and batch the order in which the recount is conducted.

People seeking recounts are required to pay in advance for each day’s work, but can stop at any time. Natalie Adona, the county registrar of voters, advised Podshadley that in addition to a first-day cost of $6,049.89, the recount would cost $3,259.41 per day. She has estimated that the 11-day total cost will amount to $44,516.

Podshadley, the owner of Trek Winery in Novato, was one of five candidates for the seat. Magali Limeta, president of the Novato Unified School District board, finished first with 50.27% of the vote. Podshadley got 17.66%.

Back in the long ago days, it was the northernmost inland Marin suburb closest to Hamilton AFB. Andy Podshadley paying for a recount with that margin of defeat, must be high on his own supply!
