Shasta clerk appointee Clint Curtis faces Joanna Francescut in June election
REDDING, Calif. One of the most heated races in the Northstate is for Shasta County clerk and registrar of voters, where incumbent Clint Curtis is facing challenger Joanna Francescut in the June election.
Curtis was appointed to the job last April by the Shasta County Board of Supervisors in a close 3-2 vote, beating out Francescut for the position. He is a lawyer from Florida and a former computer programmer who says he prefers paper ballots instead of voting machines.
In an interview, Curtis said he has made major changes to the elections office, including hiring many new workers. He said this has caused tension between staff members.
Curtis also claimed there may have been problems with electronic voting in the past, pointing to a recent recall effort involving Supervisor Kevin Crye that failed by about 50 votes. Curtis believes the margin should have been much larger, though he did not provide evidence.
