(4,412 posts)I used this app to watch the space station fly over head AND a space shuttle a minute later zooming along to catchup with it.

(9,752 posts)now you have done it, got me off on another quest, but not until winter. These two I took back in January 2022 with a Df and a cat lens. Now that I have some better gear, especially lens, I'll have to try again! It is really difficult, it's moving so fast, and I was told to pre-focus on the moon or a star, but I found it still goes in and out of focus with distance, at least with that fixed aperture lens.

(6,497 posts)I think a Df is a Nikon, but what's a "cat" lens?
HAB911
(9,752 posts)like the Hubble it compresses the light travel distance that is the "mm" measurement of a lens by using a mirror inside the lens. In this case I used a 1960's era 1000mm lens with a converter to make it a 2000mm, but it's old technology and not up to today's optics or digital sensor quality. They also have an optical flaw by today's standards, with a hot spot in the center that comes across as vignetting in a large picture, and the bokeh is always a doughnut.

(6,497 posts)The doughnut bokeh looks like a special effect.
Thanks for the info, shots and link.

(154,860 posts)You have caught the needle in a very large haystack! Beautiful shot. This really helps me get out of myself and the damn pain.
Thank you!

(6,497 posts)If this backyard shot is therapeutic to view, all the better.
I hope the pain's diminishing.

(154,860 posts)It was bad when I woke up but now its receded a bit. Being distracted by your beautiful photo really helped!

(6,497 posts)The duration of this flyover was seven minutes and the height in the sky was 42 degrees. There'll be another flyover here on Friday at 5:36 AM, which will also be visible for about seven minutes, but at 68 degrees the ISS will be significantly higher in the sky. That won't necessarily make for a better shot. With the ISS so high I likely won't be able to get objects in the foreground which give scale and make for a more interesting photo.
