I saw Al Stewart on New Year's Eve sometime in the late 80's at a casino in South Lake Tahoe. The band was quite a bit younger then, and so was I.

Though I don't think it's the room or the mix. I think it's a crummy mic on the phone of whomever videoed this. That, and the mix does seem to dry, now that I think of it.
But, there are other things to not like.
With Al not playing the piano, the solos are played with no piano backing because the guy playing piano switches to acoustic guitar. So, those parts lack size & depth. Plus, when he played the piano parts, it was pretty ham-handed and lacked the detail & touch Al brought to the song.
I absolutely love this song, but this version is.........not great.
