I have an idea to make 5' tall glass mosaic panels with different non profits all over Pittsburgh and build them into spinning, obelisks which are lit from the inside.
The idea is "Looking Around; Prophecies of Nonprofits"
they will be in the same room, all spinning, reflecting each other and each one will express the good which each non profit does. All winter I will work with different groups. The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, Global Links (surplus medical relief aid to developing countries), Construction Junction (an Architectural Salvage NonProfit), an independent midwife center, and WHO KNOWS?? it's limitless since the supplies are salvaged, and the only limitations are my energy level and willing participants. Not too bad!
http://www.wqed.org/tv/watch/onq/?id=513 this is a pbs movie about a project i did in 2009. and my website any idea of non profits that would be interesting and important to highlight will be appreciated! and also, I think this can happen in other cities. It would be beautiful.

(18,530 posts)Chicago has a stained glass museum out on Navy Pier (http://www.navypier.com/things2do/rides_attract/smith_museum.html), and I'm sure they have a bunch of non-profits. I haven't lived there in years, though.

(42 posts)Congrats! Once you do that, consider expanding to include small startups that are making a positive difference in the world...renewable energy, minimizing waste products, green stuff in general, etc. Again, congrats! Yay!

(2,248 posts)I went to this chapel, in Pittsburgh, that has the most relics outside of the vatican. The woman who took me kept saying "little bones" I picture monkey paws or barbie bones. Oh MY! there were elaborately displayed chips of bones and parts of actual crosses and teeth and skulls of saints. The craftsmanship of the displays was incredible and beautiful. I started thinking about how thats where artists would make their money, from the church. This year I have the only art of mine that has been requested or sold, has been pieces that i have donated to nonprofit after nonprofit. So I started thinking about "Prophet/ Nonprofit" Prophecies of Nonprofits.
Part of the doing donated art is that I came up with a slogan for this year, "Free is Free" if I am doing it for free, I am free to do what I want. i push myself to try new things, to not suffer over what I have learned works, to see and unsee. I have made some of my best work during this period of time.
I am so excited to be given the chance to realize this vision of spinning pillars of color, light , and meaning.
Your ideas about small businesses is great!

(42 posts)Babydollhead, you are a perfect example of how an artists mind is wired for a type of genius that ordinary peeps like me don't have. I can see what you described and say "wow...that's brilliant", but I would never have been able to think of such a thing myself in a million years. Keep up the genius thinking! :-D
