Jackpot

Hi, fellow artists. It has been a very dry ten years for me in the arts. I have had many shows, but few sales. Like many of you, the political winds have shaped a lot of my work and there has been much despair and hand wringing. That is why I am taking a moment to share some very unexpected good news.

I just finished a one woman show in Peekskill, NY. I booked the show with trepidation. I was squeezing it in at a time when I was giving care to my dying mother and I had a lot on my plate. The gallery itself was a performance space, big, but not sophisticated. It was what we would call in the 90s a guerrilla art space. The show was to open on October 14th.

Mom passed on September 15 and I almost canceled. I dug myself out of my mourning and went forward anyway. it was a very heavy lift.
When I arrived to install the work, I found that the street directly in front of the gallery was being dug up by the city, as were some of the adjoining streets, due to a long overdue beautification project. New sidewalks and curbs were being installed. Not good. I thought I was sunk.

The opening went well, but I knew most of the faces and they were supporters and not prospective buyers.

I closed the show and packed it out yesterday. I sold nearly 10 thousand dollars worth of art. I am really shocked and humbled.
I have not had a show like this since before 9/11.

Persevere. Don't doubt yourself. The universe does pay off from time to time. Thanks for listening.

And congrats on the show. It must have been hard, so soon after losing your mom, but I'll bet it's what she would have wanted - for you to persevere.

And my condolences regarding your mom.

It's very nice to read a story with a positive outcome; they have become very rare lately.
