1. Yes! I know exactly what this is!

My late, beloved Catahoula used to do this. It's called trancing and it's soothing and therapeutic for the dog. They do, indeed, go into a trance. It's rude and stressful to interrupt them. My vet said to let her finish on her own.

Both our dogs do this. We call it "slow hunting". It seems like a kind of doggy ASMR. They seek out feathery leaves and grasses that gently rub across their faces as they slowly and deliberately move through the foliage. Fascinating to watch.
