purple martins

austin texas is famouns for its bat colony but every july/august hundres of thousand of purple martins head to the trees of a parking lot to roost for the evening.

I think it's remarkable that these birds come to this place that is crowded with people, parking lots and god knows what else, to roost for the evening.

It's as though we don't even exist or even matter.

3. the lot changes every few years but not by a lot

Yesterday

they used to roost about 10 miles from where they nest now. several years ago the place they used to roost underwent redevelopment so they moved to a new location for a few years and the past couple of years they moved to a place across teh highway from there. maybe 1/4 mile at most.
