My current dog watches TV; any animal of any kind she will growl and bark at it.

My little dog would probably love being fed with a baby spoon.

(72,615 posts)Kind of like priming the pump. She will eat the kibble on the carpet and only then eat it out of her bowl.
I guess our dogs have us well trained.

(1,580 posts)We have several cats. Some of their quirks:
1. A few will only drink water from a large ceramic mug that says "live in the meow".
2. One will only eat canned food from a fork or spoon.
3. One will bang the metal water bowl around when it is empty: "fill this up now, hoomun".
4. One will jump on our shoulders and proceed to rub and roll around. He will also rub and roll on our heads when we sit in the recliner.
Living with cats is certainly entertaing!

(27,205 posts)...absolutely loves arugula, spinach, brussels sprouts leaves, and cooked cauliflower. He recognizes the crackly sound of the packaging of the arugula and spinach and will appear the moment he hears it. I've seen him leave a bowl of kibble if there's "salad" to be had.

(122 posts)He would do this bizarre thing where he would sit facing the wall and look up to the ceiling,
his ears would pin back and hed cock his head as if hearing a noise and then let out a loud reeeoowwww!!! , jump high against the wall dragging his claws as he came down and dash off to another room meowing loudly.
WTF !!!
Wife and I would just exchange shocked looks and laugh.
He was a weird little cat but we loved him and his odd ways. (sigh) We sure do miss him

(576 posts)My cat and I did a lot together. When watching TV, he would sit on my lap and lick the salt off potato chips and lick the outside of the beer bottle after I drank from it. He didn't like American beer; he preferred German or Canadian beer. When I drank American beer he would have a little to be polite, but he didn't like it. That was the best cat I have ever known, and a great friend.

(3,406 posts)would howl in a certain way when he heard classical music. It didn't matter if it was a record, no cd's this was the 70's and 80's, if someone was playing the piano, bassoon, recorder, guitar, whatever, if it was classical music he would howl. Also Scott Joplin, but not really modern classical music, Adam's, Glass, Britten. I can't remember about Vaughan Williams. And his howling was more like singing than howling.
He was a wonderful dog. On summer nights we walked in the park under the fragrant mimosa trees.

I had another cat many years later who loved to eat stir fried vegetables. She also demanded a share if I had potato chips or saltine crackers. Apparently she just loved salt. She lived to be 20, so it didn't seem to harm her.

(658 posts)When I was a teenager, my dad got a kitten from a family who was giving them away outside a Safeway store. My dad picked the runt of the litter because he felt sorry for him. The kitten grew into a very large but not fat cat. He loved going outside at night and he'd get in fights with other cats and then come back in for the evening. This very large, tough cat loved to sit with me cradling him in my arm like you would with a baby with his head on my shoulder. You would have to rub him under his neck while cradling him and If you stopped rubbing for more than a minute he'd start kicking with his legs until you resumed rubbing him.
Also, he like to sleep with me and every night, once I was in bed under the covers, he hop up on the bed, walking up my chest, turn around twice and then fall into the crook of my are with his head on my shoulder.

(73,685 posts)Always just lays down in the back seat.
Because I drive a ragtop, he wears a seatbelt harness. He can still move around.
But, he gets in, lays down, I hook up the belt and he never stands up until I unbuckle the belt. Riding with the top down and he just lays there waiting to get where we're going.
Only dog we ever had like that.

(1,947 posts). . . with extra sensitive hearing. He would start howling a good two seconds before the other dogs did and another two seconds later we mere humans would hear the fire or police sirens. We figured that extra keen hearing is what motivated him to pick up the phone receivers in his mouth (Mom finally caught him in the act) and leave the phones off the hook so he didn't have to hear them ring.
And yes, he did once pick up when it was actively ringing. My friend, who had been informed of the dog's habits, kept saying "hello" and got no response. That's when she scolded the dog with his name, and according to her, he hung up on her.
Same dog liked to perch on the top of the sofa seat and other narrow surfaces like a cat, and he was not a toy breed but pretty much medium sized, so achieving that balance was probably more of a challenge for him.
Another dog collected red items. I know what people say about dogs' perception of color, but this girl grabbed my mother's red slippers and knitted moccasins and stashed them under the end table. And it wasn't just an affinity for my mother's scent, either.
One day, I had washed two sweaters in the bathroom. They were made from the exact same knitted fabric and were both of the same intensity of color but one was teal while the other was red. I went to lay out towels in the other room so I could dry the sweaters flat. When I got back to the bathroom, the red sweater was missing. Went looking and found it exactly where I expected it to be: under the living room end table with the dog's other red treasures.
A couple of years later, when my brother and a neighbor buried her, I grabbed a red slipper to put in her grave with her.

Also, when she wants to go out, she picks up a stuffie toy from her toy box and carries it around the house. Takes it outside with her, then drops it and forgets about it.

(25,262 posts)Basil, knocked on doors when he really wanted out or in. At the back door, he'd ring the bell first, then wait and if we didn't comply with his request, he'd meow a few times then if still no action from us would sit up and knock on the door, sometimes for quite awhile. Since it was his own special trick, we'd usually cave then unless he was too sick.
