I grew up on the beach. Now, I live far away from the ocean.

It is not easy for me. I struggle every day with not being near Mother Ocean. People think I am stupid or crazy for pining for the beach.

If you know, you know.

It feels as if a part of me is missing.

My favorite is the sound when a summer deluge hits a metal roof like the one on my parents' deck.
Add in the chorus of rain hitting the bayou the deck overhangs, and it's veritable symphony.
Simultaneously soothing and invigorating

The first that comes to mind is the wind through the pine trees. You can actually hear it almost like waves coming over the other ridges of the mountains as it builds towards you and then goes past you and goes through the trees it's a really amazing sound.

Second on the list would be thunderstorm and rain in the mountains that building sound as it comes towards you. And the rain is just glorious especially in july!

Last but not least is a sound that is not a sound. Falling snow. That beautiful hush that comes with a winter snowstorm..

But the best is - train whistles in the night - 4 miles away - I have no car traffic so that and coyotes are my main night sounds.

Some nights I just hear whistle after whistle as there are 3 roads the trains have to blow their whistles at. I sleep with my deck doors open (screens ) - no air conditioning so I can hear the night really well. Also, if my rooster hears a noise in the night, he will crow and then his crowing makes my distant neighbors roosters crow.

My dogs like to sleep on upstairs deck outside my bedroom. When the coyotes come, my dogs and the coyotes try to out howl each other. It gets really loud but I love it.

Lightning is also really exciting when you live at high altitudes.

So rain, train whistles, lightning, Roos crowing and coyotes howling- these are a few of my favorite things plus my super affectionate dogs and my long time boyfriend who occasionally visits.

. An interesting geofeature of the northern tip of Manhattan is the north running Harlem River of Manhattan bends, and goes westward into the Hudson River.

It passes by two baylets. The Atlantic Ocean actually covers the Hudson River ftom the Hudson Bay northland. So this water way area going east to west has a tide. When the water gets halfway down, or up these mud flats appear in the baylets. Then when a speed boat, or the big Circle Line cruse ship comes around (it circles Manhattan) by it sends small waves that hit the mud flat, and they make small ocean wave sounds! It's so sweet, and soothing. I don't feel like I'm missing making my one trip way down into Brooklyn to hear the ocean, and see special fireworks.

And someone posted the 'sounds of my family, and friends voices'. Sure I'm fine w texting, but it's so nice to hear their voices.

may want to check out 'virtual' (no headset needed) walking tours of places around the world to include walking in the rain. The sound of rain hitting the ambient environment as well as an umbrella is very relaxing. Scenery does not suck either. This is my answer to your question- Rain maybe on umbrella.
