The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI went to the movies yesterday for the first time in two years.
The start time was given as 3:20 PM. The movie didn't start until 3:40 PM. I knew of course that they show previews and commercials before the movie starts, but I didn't remember it as being for such a long time as that.
But what got me was in the previews, it seemed like just one adrenalin jolt after another. And so much CGI! It seemed to me they were just like video games.
I know all this isn't new. But somehow yesterday it really struck me.
By the way, the movie was A COMPLETE UNKNOWN. And I 'd recommend it.

(3,681 posts)And none of those jolting trailers made me want to see the movie. Such an annoying waste of time. The last time I went to a Regal chain theater may be the last time for real.
Luckily we have a local art house theater, where I saw A Complete Unknown last week. I thought that was great. Wonderful performances.

(3,634 posts)I am amazed at how many animated movies there are. We are not in a major market and the local AMC I think is struggling. Half or more of the movies are animation and aimed at kids. I don't particularly care given all the content on streaming services but says something bout future of film I think. We saw the Dylan film too and liked it. Shows you can be a major talent and a pretty big a**hole at the same time, not that that is news.

But I love going out and seeing strangers once in a while, possibly even striking up a conversation about the movie with someone. Don't let theaters die!

(4,020 posts)The trailer for Conclave made me want to see it and that is a movie I probably would not have thought I was interested in.
Bugs me that they give away the whole film in trailers now but some believe that unexpected twists are overrated as a selling point. Tarantino said "Story telling is a ritual" and I can see that. Movie going is a ritual -- the popcorn, the trailers, etc. Certainly the annual TV showings of "Wizard of Oz" and "It's a Wonderful Life" are not diminished by knowing every single scene but it might be nice to go into a new film without knowing how it ends.
An Accurate parody of modern film trailers:
