(38,662 posts)The heads didn't hold onto pencil tops like advertised. Creepy Crawlers was better.
A Gumby & Pokey lightboard for drawing the longest. I had that thing through high school & used it all the time!

(6,737 posts)It was the tricorder and the communicator. I hastily put them together (not very well) and then it was time to go to my grandmothers house for Christmas lunch and to get presents from that side of the family. The drive usually took about an hour and a half.
We loaded the car and I placed my beloved new Star Trek props in their box under the front seat so that they would not slide around and get broken. Then, we left. It was a cold day (for the Tidewater) so we had the heat on and we were ready for some lunch and some presents. Then, we arrived at my grandmother's.
I ran around the car to grab the box from under the seat. That is when I noticed that the box was VERY hot to the touch. I had to get it out of the car and into the cold air to finally be able to handle it. I then opened it. And, learned a very important lesson about cars, and about tensile strength of plastics used for models.
Both models were partially melted. The communicator was almost completely ruined and the tricorder was warped so that I could not open the top. It also had a melted hole in one side of it. As you may imagine, my 9 year old self let out a wail that was heard for miles.
So, final lifespan? About two hours. The glue was not even dry when I put them in the car. It sure was by the time we arrived.

(93,870 posts)Was a watch that I wanted so badly, any watch, I just wanted a watch at ten years old. And I got one!
My much older sister, who was in college so not home much, gave me a rather interesting looking "mod" watch and I was so excited. But within days it was not working, not no way, not no how. It was a mystery. She took it back and exchanged it so I had a new watch once again. And about two days later it refused to work. I wasn't over-winding or anything, I just seemed kill watches.
It was the beginning of recognizing a life-long lie energy thing, I kill or mess up clocks. There are no two clocks in my home that keep correct time. Some always run ten minutes fast, one insists on11 minutes and twenty - two seconds and even the one on my laptop is usually off by a couple minutes if I go by broadcasting time. Not sure what it is exactly but my presence near any clock will influence it somehow, no matter the power source for the clock/watch.

(93,870 posts)Nope, I figured out then that I cannot wear them as they stop working within days. Quartz or wind up, doesn't matter they respond to my energy rather poorly so I don't bother wearing them. Besides, I found that I am pretty good at guessing what time it is, usually my guess is within five to fifteen minutes.

(6,737 posts)Growing up in the absolute boondocks, it was enough of a feat to find the model in the first place. After I realized that they were pretty much toast, I started trying to repair them. I did not do so well, because my Taurean nature always got in the way.

(93,870 posts)A couple years older than me, was into model building up until he was about fourteen. I built a few myself, they were pretty fragile.
