(25,067 posts)their so called talking points. They can all go jump into the lake, if you ask me.
I rather watch the flintstones or some other similar show, and simply just enjoy the show. Some channels do have an all day event, like showing Gilligan's Island all day, or something similar.
Happy New Year's Eve and Day!

(36,644 posts)My Nana died unexpectedly on New Year's Day when I was 13 and New Year's has sucked ever since. Besides, crowds, parties, and especially small talk physically exhaust me so there's that, too. Yuck.

(956 posts)The problem is that the other TV alternatives are worse.
Or maybe, the problem is really just watching New Years Eve at Times Square.
I see a lot of people who really need to go to the bathroom.
I'm just not a fan of today's popular music and flashy culture.

(23,152 posts)They close at 9 so we went early for a fun dinner. The food is moderately priced, with large portions; it is a BYOB place and the owners are staunch Democrats! I think we had 9 or 10 that night.
If enough folks want to do it this year we may repeat it.
OR we might have my sister in law over and watch movies. She used to join us on New Year's Eve and we would play board games or work jigsaw puzzles.
Third option is watch movies with Mr YD. If we do that I will figure out a good supper for us.

I don't know how anyone in a scene with him could keep a straight face. Would love to see the outtakes/bloopers.

(10,526 posts)... around to see what is on... I think they are CNN. I don't know who the alternatives are and I don't recall liking any of them. I think there was one channel that showed reruns of Dick Clark. I liked him on American Bandstand and never understood how he became the New Year's Eve man... he was the Pyramid game too, I think... maybe when he got older, appearing one day a year became more interesting! Oh, and there was Guy Lombardo. I don't remember his shows, but I do know that people watched him and sang a song... Old Lang Syne... Guess I'll go to sleep!

Coming from a career rock and roll-er, that statement is so disheartening...

(32,761 posts)Last year my son must have bought several hundred dollars worth of fireworks. That was the fun part. Home fireworks are a big thing here. If my son doesn't purchase a bunch of them, we may got up on a hill and look down at the city. Thousands of illegal fireworks go off at midnight..

My wife, my brother and I are in Charleston, South Carolina for a gathering we attend every year. Some special people always attend. This year, some friends include one from Paris, one from Madrid, a special friend from Iowa, one of the most important members of the Clinton West Wing, Peter and Gwen Norton (as in anti-virus), a Nobel Prize winner in Physics, a bunch of others. Ill be part of a panel remembering a friend who used to attend every year, Dr. Ruth Westheimer, who came something like 30 years in a row. Longer than Ive been coming, anyway. Its always interesting, because to be asked to attend in the first place, you have to have done, or be doing, something interesting. Needless to say, I am a VERY low man on that totem pole.
Its tiring, stimulating, never boring, and we always consider it worth the trip, despite the cumbersome planes we have to take to get here.

(57,609 posts)This year, I got to meet and talk with author Scott Turow (Presumed Innocent), who promised to read my book, and tell me what he thought. For that, it was worth the trip alone, although seeing some old friends is always privilege.

(20,356 posts)The first holidays after my husband died were hard to get through. I'm sorry I missed posts of your loss. My best friend died Oct. 1. There were a lot of tough losses this year, but this was the worst. Most of the year, I was wrapped up in her illness as she lost ground, and now mourning her loss.

(72,137 posts)Between 1976 & 2007, my bands played 29 9f those New Year's Eves.
For 2 of them, the band's weren't together long enough to have booked a NYE gig, but the band through a coming out party for friends & family of the band(s). One of those, the band had only been together a month, so we only had 8 or 9 songs we would do in front of people. So, we played them all twice.
So, 31 out of 32 years I played on NYE. That's enough "celebration" for me.
