Democrats' tariff gambit sparks new headaches for Mike Johnson

(The Hill) This week’s rebuke of President Trump’s tariff regime by a small group of House Republicans is only the start of what will likely be a series of headaches over the issue for Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), threatening to derail the White House’s messaging on the tariffs in a critical election year.

First, Republican leaders failed to get enough support in the razor-thin majority to reinstate a ban on members forcing snap votes to repeal national emergency authority, with three members defecting. Then, six House Republicans sided with Democrats in a Wednesday vote supporting a resolution led by Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) to repeal Trump’s tariffs on Canada.

Now, Democrats are plotting to force a wave of votes to repeal Trump’s Mexico tariffs, Brazil tariffs, “Liberation Day” global tariffs and others, hoping to keep the issue in the headlines, continuously pit Republicans against Trump and sharply criticize vulnerable Republicans who don’t back their bills.

I read that right here on DU. And they are circling. They better not go too far though and mess up the midterms.
