Timothy Snyder: "Homegrowns are Next" -- Foreign gulags for US citizens
"In his meeting with President Nayib Bukele today in the White House, President Donald Trump told his Salvadoran counterpart that home-growns are next and that El Salvador would need to be build about five more places to hold American citizens.
So the president of the United States proposes, on camera, to deport Americans to foreign concentration camps.
Here is a clip, with thanks:

And here is a link to full Salvadoran news feed, as shared by President Nayib Bukele on Twitter. [Sorry for posting X, but this is an evil meeting that must be seen to be believed]
The [Oval Office] exchange begins at about 7:20...
Link to tweet
Here is the US reporter Danielle Kurtzleben noting the exchange.
Perhaps the worst part is the laughter of the Americans."
-------------------------------------
THE worsts of this meeting are
a) that Trump disses and dismisses CNN and other reporters,
b) that Trump self righteously hate-rant on Zelensky, Biden and Obama, with "I just want to stop it" meaning, I will negotiate a Putin win,
b) the lying Stephen Miller and Marco Rubio propagandize that Abrego Garcia was an illegal alien, and
c) that the SCOTUS 9-0 backs the district court and defends the refusal to "facilitate" the return of Garcia under the rubric of refusing to engage in or define foreign policy.
They gish gallop overwhelm Bukele with disinformation/lies into taking the side of this administration. It's the totalitarian oligarch deal to end the judiciary, and eventually blackbag "criminals" as defined by this ungodly administration.

(40,323 posts)1. Worst case: What Bukele has done is what Trump eventually might try, possibly by declaring the Democratic Party
a criminal party.

Trump's foreign policy is a) deal making, and b) to outsource the capture of his "enemies" in the U.S., and c) end U.S. democracy to begin one party rule. It looks clear that El Salvador's president has (contracted) sold out his nation to the Axis of Evil.
El Salvador has experienced democratic backsliding under Bukele, as he has dismantled democratic institutions, curtailed political and civil liberties, and attacked independent media and the political opposition.
Bukele has been described as an authoritarian and autocrat.
In February 2020, Bukele ordered 40 soldiers into the Legislative Assembly building to intimidate lawmakers into approving a US$109 million loan for the Territorial Control Plan.
After Nuevas Ideas won a supermajority in the 2021 legislative election, Bukele's allies in the legislature voted to replace the attorney general and all five justices of the Supreme Court of Justice's Constitutional Chamber.
Bukele has attacked journalists and news outlets on social media, drawing allegations of press censorship.
Before Bukele's presidency, he considered himself a member of the radical left, but Bukele has since not identified with any political ideology; political analysts have described him as a populist and a conservative.
Bukele has high job approval ratings in El Salvador and is popular throughout Latin America.
