Jim Acosta has resigned from CNN, after the network proposed to move him to a graveyard midnight shift (9 PM Pacific Time) while moving Wolf Blitzer to the more desirable time slot. The shuffle follows mass layoffs at the cable network.

A son of Cuban refugees, Acosta was a twenty-year CNN veteran, and fearless. He gave Cuba’s then-president Raul Castro an exposure to a free press with questions about human rights abuses. He was a trenchant White House press room presence during the first Trump term. Such was their annoyance at Acosta’s questions that the Trumpsters tried to yank his press credentials, only to retreat in the face of Fourth Estate protest.

Eventually, they pretty much stopped giving briefings.

Trump was frequently but not always called out on his lies and excesses and experienced a disastrous final year in office capped by his defeat in the 2020 election.

They made a great investment.

As long as corporate investment pays the bills. The free press that exists in this country has trouble getting attention.

There are few critical thinkers in the media, allowed the freedom to practice their craft.
