Donald Trump attempts to un-rename Mount Denali over Alaskans' objections

Donald Trump has directed that the highest peak in North America be stripped of its Athabascan Indian name and again carry the name of our twenty-fifth president.

A Trump executive order directs that within thirty days, Mount Denali will become Mount McKinley again. President Obama bestowed the name Denali in 2015 at the behest of Alaska native groups and political leaders.

The president’s action was a bow to the Gilded Age — robber barons held sway before Theodore Roosevelt — and a Trumpian display of vengeance.

The chief champion of the name Denali has been Alaska’s Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski, who chairs the Senate Indian Affairs Committee.
