GM lays off 1,000 workers, even as it nears record profits

GM says it’s “optimizing” its operations through layoffs and facility closures.

Elijah Nicholson-MessmerNov 21, 2024

General Motors laid off approximately 1,000 workers last Friday, with employees reportedly notified via early morning emails.

The cuts affected both salaried and hourly staff, including some United Auto Workers (UAW) members. A majority of the layoffs were concentrated at GM’s Global Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Layoffs amid record profits
News of the layoffs comes alongside GM’s decision to shutter operations at its Yuma, Arizona proving grounds—used for hot-weather testing— and its Durability, Corrosion, and Teardown facilities at its Milford Proving Grounds complex located just outside of Detroit. In a statement to the Detroit Free Press, the company said that it is working to “optimize for speed and excellence.”

We have no choice but to win them back. Not the sole reason but it is part of it IMHO. We must look at everything in the post-mortem.

If the original Build Back Better bill passed, Kamala would’ve won. Blame
@Sen_JoeManchin and @SenatorSinema
for watering it down, SCREWING the country and democrats and handing power back to Trump

We have excellent reporting from the New York Times that wealthy donors shaped the messaging of the Harris campaign to downplay anti-price gouging action. That was much more important to knee-capping Harris than putative damage of supporting anti-monopoly (which Harris in fact didn't even do in campaign). Unless Shorist address this problem, they are not serious.

Vote for billionaires, and billionaires fire em.
The Agriculture billionaires will hire them for crop procurement, with no minimum wage protection. Maybe they get a 2 percent discount on crops they harvest.
MAGA. We gonna be Great Again, Again.
FAFO.
Sincere apologies to those that did not vote for this shit show.
What is the tally so far of billionaires and multi multi millionaires already in cab positions?
They love the working folks. And really hate poor folks. All decked out in Chinese MAGA shit head to toe.

At some stage, there had to be a tipping point to pure quarterly capitalism aka greed, couched as “fiscal responsibility.”

It’s as if every public company operates this was. I work for one myself. Never made more money, never been more profitable, yet the layoffs keep coming. C-level compensation never seems to take a hit. In fact it increases at the expense of personnel.
