Trump Calls for Probe Into Gasoline Price 'Gouging'

June 24 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he has instructed the Department of Justice to look into oil companies for not lowering gasoline pump prices in line with falling crude costs, and accused the companies of "gouging" customers.
Trump did not name any companies in his social media post, which came after midnight. The White House and the Justice Department (DOJ) did not respond to a request for further comment outside regular business hours.
Diplomacy between the U.S. and Iran has translated into relief at the pump for Americans, data showed earlier this week, with gasoline prices falling for a sixth straight week. However, Trump said the fall in gasoline prices was neither enough nor proportionate with declines in crude oil costs. "Gasoline prices better start going down a lot faster than what Im seeing!"
Trump's latest post comes as consumers raise concern over high gasoline prices, just as the president and fellow Republicans are battling to hold narrow majorities in Congress in November's midterm elections. The average price of gasoline in the U.S. was $3.906 per gallon early Wednesday, GasBuddy data showed, down more than 14% from the peak in May.

Gaslighting
Reviewed by Abigail Fagan on November 10, 2025
Gaslighting is an insidious form of manipulation and psychological control. Victims of gaslighting are deliberately and systematically fed false information that leads them to question what they know to be true, often about themselves. They may end up doubting their memory, their perception, and even their sanity. Over time, a gaslighters manipulations can grow more complex and potent, making it increasingly difficult for the victim to see the truth.

(33,060 posts)Maybe it's time to nationalize the oil and gas industries, after all you gave them our land and water to drill on.
By the bye Krasnov, with a war in the ME, oil and gas should have been much higher. Remember those 43 times you claimed a peace deal was imminent and crude dropped 3% every time? Oh, sorry, I forgot, your memory is shot.

(4,246 posts)Its that Trumps antics with his on again/off again war with Iran have run the oil speculators out of town. Without speculators being active in the oil futures market, futures prices are down and have been down for weeks on the order of $25 per barrel.
I loath Trump but hes demonstrated that speculators are collectively pumping up oil prices to the detriment of all consumers. What market purpose is inflating commodity prices for short periods of time and distorting everything just for pure profit?!?
I truly hope Congress and Trump can put something in place to prohibit folks from driving up prices for their own profit. You shouldnt be buying futures contracts unless youre physically capable of taking delivery of the product. Otherwise youre only in for mischief and causing misery and extra costs to clean up after you.
