A coalition of states, including New York, has filed a federal lawsuit challenging new funding requirements imposed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Massachusetts, argues the agency is placing unlawful conditions on billions of dollars in federal funding tied to food assistance, agriculture, and environmental programs.
According to the complaint, the USDAs new terms apply to a wide range of programs, including SNAP, WIC, school meals, and agricultural research funding.
The states claim the conditions are vague and could force them to comply with undefined federal policies related to issues such as immigration and gender identity. Officials argue the requirements could jeopardize funding that supports millions of residents, including low-income families, children, and farmers.
