PITTSBURGH The United Steelworkers (USW) today condemned BP for engaging in unfair labor practices and illegally locking out nearly 1,000 members of USW Local 7-1 at its Whiting, Indiana, refinery, calling on the company to return to the bargaining table and negotiate a fair contract in good faith.
The union said BPs actions disrupt workers livelihoods and undermine the collective bargaining process, escalating tensions instead of working toward a reasonable agreement that respects workers contributions and safety.
BPs decision to lock out these skilled workers is unacceptable and unlawful, said USW International President Roxanne Brown. Generations of union members have kept this refinery running safely and efficiently, and they deserve a contract that reflects their value not intimidation tactics designed to force concessions.
USW District 7 Director Mike Millsap said the companys actions threaten not only workers and their families but also the safety and stability of the surrounding community.
