House Republicans threaten to oppose Senate bills until SAVE America Act passes

House Republicans are threatening to oppose all Senate-passed legislation until the upper chamber advances the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act, a GOP-backed voting requirements bill. “I’ll be voting ‘no’ on all Senate bills – other than DHS funding – until the Senate passes the SAVE America Act,” Rep. Brandon Gill (R-Texas) wrote Friday on the social platform X.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) also wrote on X that, “The Senate will no longer have legislation passed until the SAVE America Act is passed and on the President’s desk.” The SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship to register to vote in elections and the presentation of an ID to cast a ballot, is expected to come to the Senate floor next week for a procedural vote.

However, it would require some Democratic support to overcome a filibuster, posing a challenge for Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.).

Thune has been facing pressure from President Trump and House Republicans to sidestep Democratic opposition through the use of a “talking filibuster,” which would force Democrats to speak continuously on the Senate floor to delay the bill. Once they cede the floor, Republicans could pass the measure with 51 votes. But Thune has previously said a talking filibuster is “much more complicated and risky than people are assuming at the moment,” and has opted to advance the bill through regular order.

They haven't been in session much this past year anyway so why bother now?

1. Unlike Mike Johnson, Thune isn't a total idiot.

If there's a talking filibuster, a lot of stuff read by Democrats go into the public domain and Congressional Record.

Imagine how a lot of Republican women realizing their votes won't count because they lack a passport, birth certificate, driver's license, and/or the ability to show they are the same person but with their husband's last name. And not enough time to get this all fixed (re-registering and all that) by November. Their right to vote has been taken away by their "Favorite President".

They won't care about "illegal, foreign" voters. They'll care about THEIR right to vote.

And when Democrats explain the SAVE Act over and over and over during their filibuster, they WILL understand.

Plus, DO Republicans have the 51 votes to pass it with the talking filibuster? All that's needed is to flip two votes.

And the Republicans in the Senate who do vote to enact it have put a target on their backs, because they've handed another issue to Democrats for the Midterm Election.

3. We had hoped that talking about "Project 2025" over and over and over during the 2024 campaign

would have made a difference but it seemed people didn't care and waved it away as "political hyperbole". And now here we are.
