DOHA, Jan 14 (Reuters) - Some personnel have been advised to leave the U.S. military's Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar by Wednesday evening, three diplomats told Reuters, amid warnings from Washington that it could intervene to protect protesters in Iran.
The U.S. embassy in Doha had no immediate comment and Qatar's ministry of foreign affairs did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for confirmation or comment.
Al Udeid is the Middle East's largest U.S. base, housing around 10,000 troops.
"It's a posture change and not an ordered evacuation," one of the diplomats told Reuters. The diplomat said he was not aware that a specific reason had been given for the posture change. A senior Iranian official told Reuters earlier that Tehran warned regional countries it would strike U.S. military bases in case of an attack by Washington, after President Donald Trump threatened to intervene in Iran.

When the U.S. bombed Iran last June, Iran launched strikes against that base in Qatar.

(1,618 posts)and McCains "hot dogging" on a bombing run, resulting in him getting shot down, and becoming a POW in the Hanoi Hilton....
Did you know that his father was an admiral, and probably the reason he got into the Academy, but graduated 499 out of a class of 500? At least that was what was reported......
I have read conflicting reports on his actions on the U.S.S. Forrestal.......

(166,074 posts)knew about his risk-taking, his father, AND he was born in Panama - and off-base too! During the rancorous "birther" mess, people went after McCain (and the hypocrisy of the GOP) and not being "natural born" in the U.S. (although we know it doesn't matter where you are born if both your parents are citizens). Also know about his wife's wealth, 7 homes, and her becoming an Ambassador (to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture). But that is a whole other story!

(1,596 posts)Donald Trump is said to be ready to push the button on military strikes against Iran, after the U.S. and U.K. withdrew personnel from bases in the Middle East.
The U.S. president has been mulling direct action against Iran, amid ongoing and widespread protests in the country calling for an end to the ayatollahs regime. Trump has warned there would be hell to pay if protesters were killed, but has yet to act despite reports of a death toll now topping 2,500.
A Washington source close to the U.S. administration told The Independent that strikes could be carried out within the next 24 hours.

The one thing that the president is waiting on is that the Iranian banks are on the point of collapse which means the IRGC [Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps] and others will not get paid once that happens, they added. If that happens, then the regime will collapse by itself and the president is waiting on that but he will not wait long.
