Scoop: Over 50 House Democrats sign onto Kristi Noem articles of impeachment

Source: msn/Axios

1h

Over 50 House Democrats have signed on to co-sponsor articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Axios has learned.

Why it matters: That is roughly a quarter of the House Democratic caucus — a far cry from the party's out-of-hand dismissal of every other impeachment effort that has cropped up thus far during Trump's second term.

  • Reps. Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.), Al Green (D-Texas) and Haley Stevens (D-Mich.) were all derided by colleagues for their efforts to impeach Trump or his Cabinet officials and garnered little support.
  • But this push by Rep. Robin Kelly (D-Ill.), a member of Democratic leadership, is riding a tsunami of anti-Noem sentiment within the caucus sparked by the shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis last week.

  • By the numbers: A total of 53 House Democrats signed on to the bill by the Tuesday afternoon co-sponsorship deadline, according from a list obtained by Axios.

  • Several of the co-sponsors represent battleground districts, including Reps. Gabe Vasquez (D-N.M.), Brittany Pettersen (D-Colo.) and Eric Sorensen (D-Ill.).
  • Others, such as Reps. Angie Craig (D-Minn.) and Seth Moulton (D-Mass.), are well-known centrists who are now in competitive Democratic primaries for U.S. Senate seats.
  • Kelly's office told Axios that several more lawmakers may still sign on as co-sponsors later on.

  • The details: The articles, set to be formally unveiled Wednesday, will accuse Noem of three counts.

    Tuesday

Noem was confirmed January 25, 2025, almost a year ago. There were also 6 (D)s/(I)s who didn't vote.

Question: On the Nomination (Confirmation: Kristi Noem, of South Dakota, to be Secretary of Homeland Security )

    YEAs

    Fetterman (D-PA)
    Hassan (D-NH)
    Kaine (D-VA)
    Kim (D-NJ)
    Peters (D-MI)
    Shaheen (D-NH)
    Slotkin (D-MI)

    Not Voting

    King (I-ME)
    Merkley (D-OR)
    Schatz (D-HI)
    Smith (D-MN)
    Warnock (D-GA)
    Wyden (D-OR)

I doubt that any of them (except maybe Fetterman) feel the same way today after the atrocities that have occurred the past year.

    4. The ones who did (except maybe Andy Kim, who was new)
    Tue Jan 13, 2026, 07:19 PM
    Tuesday

were "centrists" (although Kim can swing back and forth further left).

I don't think any of them thought they were "paying for" a vicious cosplaying lunatic.

    8. I hear you. I wish I didn't have to hope that the non-voters commit this year to unify with the rest of the caucus.

For the greater good, we need a unified Senate Democratic caucus. This year, the old days of self interest & policy differences need to be over, so that voting age young people back home see the party as strongly unified for the good of their futures & the country. We can battle later over prioritizing some donors' or states' interests.

There's still a class war going on, and the Silicon-Heritage oligarch network is winning, all while millions have been distracted by who's hiding the remaining million Epstein files, and what congressional Democrats will do to enforce the law if they vote for them in the midterms.

Blue states will be defending against a full on govt attack, which has already begun. I'm too physically tired right now to think anymore on whether Big Dark Money decides we won't have midterms.

    Thanks for some clarity.

The effort to hold the Homeland Security secretary to account probably won’t pass, but that doesn’t make it irrelevant.

The impeachment effort targeting Kristi Noem almost certainly won’t succeed, at least not anytime soon, but it’s starting with a heck of a lot more congressional support than the usual impeachment resolutions. www.ms.now/rachel-maddo...

Last week, Democratic Rep. Robin Kelly of Illinois announced plans to file articles of impeachment against Noem. This week, she followed through — along with quite a few of her colleagues. HuffPost reported:

With the support of nearly 70 colleagues, Rep. Robin Kelly (D-Ill.) on Wednesday introduced three articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

The first accuses Noem of obstruction of Congress, for denying lawmakers access to Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities to provide oversight. The second accuses her of violating public trust, for directing DHS agents to arrest people without warrants and for ignoring due process. The third accuses her of self-dealing, for secretly steering a federal contract to a firm run by her friend.

“Secretary Noem has called my impeachment effort ‘silly,’” Kelly told reporters. “I want to tell her right now, ‘Secretary Noem, you have violated your oath of office, and there will be consequences. I am watching you. Members of Congress are watching you. The American people, most importantly, are watching you.’”

Rep. Kelly: Secretary Noem, you have violated your oath of office. And there will be consequences.

....The articles of impeachment against Noem, however, are quantitatively different: Kelly’s resolution was introduced with the support of 69 House Democrats, which represents roughly a third of the party’s conference in the chamber, and there’s no reason to assume that total won’t grow.....

But there’s certainly symbolic value in the Democratic effort, which is being used to draw attention to the failures and outrages at the Department of Homeland Security. Watch this space.
