PORTLAND, Ore. — President Donald Trump appears to be cooling on his plans to send troops to Portland to protect U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities, according to an interview Sunday morning with NBC.

When asked whether he is still sending troops to Portland, which he described as "War ravaged" in a social media post Saturday, Trump said his administration will make a decision on that 'pretty soon.'

"Well, I mean, we're certainly looking at it," Trump said. "You can't have that. We don't want that. They're attacking our ICE facility and they're attacking other federal buildings."

OREGON, USA — Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield announced Sunday that the state has filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration alleging that President Donald Trump unlawfully ordered the deployment of 200 Oregon National Guard members for federal law enforcement duties.

The lawsuit, which was filed jointly by the State of Oregon and the City of Portland in U.S. District Court, challenges the legal basis of the federal order. It names President Trump, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, and their respective departments as defendants.

In a statement, Rayfield said the deployment is not based on any legitimate threat but is instead “about the President flexing political muscle under the guise of law and order.”

“Oregon communities are stable, and our local officials have been clear: we have the capacity to manage public safety without federal interference,” Rayfield said. “Sending in 200 National Guard troops to guard a single building is not normal.”

According to the Oregon Department of Justice, the order was issued earlier in the day in a memo sent to Governor Tina Kotek. It authorized the guard to protect federal property for 60 days in areas “where protests are occurring or likely to occur.”

Donald Trump told reporters that he might send national guard troops into Portland, Oregon, apparently because he was misled about the scale of small protests there by a TV report that featured video of a 2020 protest wrongly described as having taken place this summer.

“I will say this, I watched today, I didn’t know that was continuing to go on, but Portland is unbelievable, what’s going on,” Trump said. He then claimed, incorrectly, that he had seen video evidence of “the destruction of the city”.

In fact, a handful of protesters have demonstrated outside an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in a residential area of Portland along the south waterfront this year, but the scale of the protests, which attract dozens at most, is nothing like the 2020 protests following the police killing of George Floyd that regularly drew thousands to tens of thousands of demonstrators to a central part of the city for months.

But as ridiculous as this was, much of the public was left to wonder which city might be next on the White House’s target list. We apparently didn’t have to wait too long to find out. NBC News reported:

President Donald Trump said Saturday that he was directing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to ‘provide all necessary Troops’ to Portland, Oregon. In a post on Truth Social, the president wrote that the troops would ‘protect War ravaged Portland’ and protect Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities that he claimed are ‘under siege from attack by Antifa and other domestic terrorists.'

As part of the same online missive, the Republican said he’s “authorizing Full Force, if necessary.” What did that mean, exactly? I’m not altogether sure, though it sounded as if the American president was authorizing the use of military force against Americans on American soil.....

The official line from Trump is that the city is “war ravaged” and “under siege,” making it necessary to use troops to protect local ICE facilities. The official line, however, is obvious nonsense.

Taken just a few minutes ago outside the ICE facility in Portland that Trump claims is under siege. My message to Donald Trump is this: we don’t need you here. Stay the hell out of our city.
