July 30 (Reuters) - A magnitude 8 earthquake struck off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday, sparking tsunami warnings from Japan and the U.S. Tsunami Warning Center.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake was shallow, at a depth of 19.3 km (12 miles).
The Japan Weather Agency said it expected a tsunami of 1 meter (3.28 feet) to reach large coastal areas starting around 0100 GMT.
The U.S. Tsunami Warning System also issued a warning of "hazardous tsunami waves" within the next three hours along some coasts of Russia and Japan.

(535 posts)While everyone had their attention focused on some islands between Okinawa and the Kyushu mainland, a big M8.7 mfer hit off the coast of Kamchatka. There's a 10ft tsunami evacuation warning for Osaka east/northward, and a tsunami alert for the rest of Japan's Pacific coast, as well as nearly the entire coast of Hokkaido.

That's a step below a warning, and we've had a couple of those in the 16 years I've lived here (actually in Capitola) without incident, except for boats in the harbor being sloshed around a bit after the big quake east of Japan some years ago that did so much damage there.

(13,041 posts)I heard it was only going to be an issue with boats at marinas and ports being roughed around. I recall years ago this happened in Marina Del Rey (or thereabouts) and there was quite a bit of damage.
Hawaii is the trouble spot.
