Court filing details what layoffs White House was seeking at over a dozen agencies

The Trump administration this spring sought the ability to conduct mass layoffs at more than a dozen agencies, according to a new court filing that reveals what parts of the federal government were in the crosshairs of the White House’s cost-cutting efforts — and which could be again now that the Supreme Court has cleared a legal block to staff reductions across the federal government.

According to a Thursday court declaration filed in the Northern District of California, the administration sought the go-ahead to lay people off at 17 agencies, including the departments of the Treasury, State, Interior, Agriculture, Labor, Commerce, Housing  and Urban Development, and Health and Human Services.

Notably, the list doesn’t include the FAA, which has been under scrutiny since January’s midair disaster in Washington and amid firings of probationary workers in February. The agency is also set to embark on an ambitious effort to revamp the nation’s air traffic control system. But it does include several other subagencies in the Department of Transportation, as well the General Services Administration, the U.S. Agency for Global Media and the National Archives and Records Administration, among others.

The document, from Noah Peters, senior adviser to Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor, shows efforts to pave the way for laying off people at offices that deal with environmental enforcement, controlling hazards from lead in homes and ensuring automobile and railroad safety, as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the IRS’ Independent Office of Appeals and more.
