Oklahoma man accused of targeting television news weather radar

Source: msn/NBC News

An Oklahoma man is accused of vandalizing a TV station's weather radar, police said Thursday, in what the station says could be an attack inspired by an anti-government militia group. Anthony Tyler Mitchell, 39, has been booked on suspicion of felony malicious injury to property, burglary and damage to critical infrastructure, Oklahoma City police Capt. Valerie Littlejohn said in a statement.

CBS affiliate KWTV reported that it has video of a man destroying the power supply to the station's NextGen Live radar in northeast Oklahoma City. The station linked the attack to rhetoric by Veterans On Patrol, an anti-government militia group. "At this time, we are not able to confirm any connection with him and the group Veterans on Patrol," Littlejohn said.

In an interview with NBC News on Thursday, group founder Michael Lewis Arthur Meyer denied giving any directions to attack weather equipment. But he welcomed such acts in Oklahoma, insisting that radars and other meteorological equipment are part of a government conspiracy to manipulate weather. The claims of such conspiracy are baseless.

"When we destroy and eliminate over 15 in a state of Oklahoma, your radar maps are going to change big time, and the weather is just going to be completely different over Oklahoma and the surrounding area," he said Thursday.

Here we go!

This is almost worse than the spate of RW loons shooting up power substations. If they decide to go after the NWS NEXRAD radars, which take awhile to repair, and where many of them are older and are continually needing maintenance, then this will really be bad news.

And in this case, this happened in of all places - OK - where NOAA's SPC (the Storm Prediction Center) is headquartered. They are usually the ones who issue Severe Thunderstorm Watches nationally (where the local NWS offices will issue the Warnings).

2. We don't have to resort to that sort of violence here in Texas.

Our politicians---aided and abetted by trump---just ignore what the weather radar indicates. And hundreds die. No need to be mean to the hardware.

we can't call them terrorists for some reason

Of course educated normal people know radar is used to track and predict storms and their trajectory. So if these idiots destroy the equipment, people in the area won't know when storms are headed their way. It can be a big problem for tornadoes too in that part of the country.

And I commented to the person - you can’t be that stupid because you wouldn’t be able to breathe. I got in trouble, which was correct, shouldn’t have been said.
But
How can people be that gullible and still breath?

get this straight. If you destroy weather equipment, it will completely change the weather in your area. Is that what this goofball is saying? I must be mistaken.

13. Not change the actual weather, but it is the ostrich effect. If you don't know about the tornado, how can it hurt you.

Anyone with a brain cell able to reason would know that since it runs 24/7 then shouldn't there be bad weather 24/7?

18. Anyone recall the people destroying 5G cell towers which they 'believed' were being used to spread COVID??
Fri Jul 11, 2025, 06:22 PM

This was more common (per capita) in the UK, but here in Texas we had our own lunatics (as did some other states) who were not necessarily focused on stopping COVID, but on preventing 5G being used to spy on citizens (as if simply getting rid of 5G would help!)

The image is of a person *apparently* showing a common demographic for this sort of delusional destruction.

A San Antonio man has been sentenced to 6½ years in prison for trying to burn down cellphone towers — and for being a felon with a gun.

Sean Aaron Smith, 30, admitted to damaging six towers in the area, though San Antonio Fire Department arson investigators suspected him of trying destroy as many as 22, according to court records.

The total damage to the 22 towers was more than $1.12 million, prosecutors told U.S. District Judge Xavier Rodriguez on Wednesday...

“Witnesses reported the defendant was on a ‘mission’ to destroy the 5G towers because he hated the Government and believed they were spying on him,”...“The SAFD arson investigator’s expert opinion is the modus operandi of the other 16 cellular tower arsons match the six towers for which the Defendant pled guilty and that all 22 arsons were committed by the same person.”
