E. Jean Carroll took a victory lap on Thursday in response to an appeals court order affirming its ruling to uphold a civil verdict that found President Donald Trump liable for sexually abusing and defaming Carroll. "Thursday, July 10th, 2025," she wrote. "So long, Old Man! The United States Court of Appeals, 2nd Circuit, bids thee farewell."
The appeals court handed down its initial ruling in June but issued a mandate affirming that ruling and triggering the window for the Trump administration to ask the Supreme Court to step in and overturn the verdict. Newsweek reached out to the White House for comment via email on Thursday evening.
The Context
A New York City jury in May 2023 found Trump liable for sexually abusing Carroll, an advice columnist, in 1996 and awarded her $5 million. The president was also found liable for defaming Carroll over her allegations. The jury's verdict was announced just three hours after it began deliberations.
Another civil jury in January 2024 found Trump liable for defaming Carroll in 2019, after she first publicly accused him of raping her in a dressing room at a Bergdorf Goodman department store. After Carroll published a book detailing her allegations, Trump said he had never met the writer and that her book "should be sold in the fiction section." The jury ordered the president to shell out $83.3 million to Carroll in damages in the second case. Trump is appealing that verdict.

(37,957 posts)Chump had to put the money in escrow in order to pursue the appeal, and now he's lost.
The escrow $ goes to E. Jean Carroll. We're done with this.....

(157,020 posts)he can still appeal to the SCOTUS and when he does, who knows how long that will take (any other time, as Justice Sotomayor quipped, he has them "on speed dial" ). If they did react quickly, it would be to apply some kind of stay before delaying forever and I would hope I'm proven wrong, but have my doubts at this point.

(45,472 posts)The 3-judge Second Circuit decision denying Trump's appeal of the $5 million defamation award was handed down on December 30, 2024. Trump then sought to have the case reheard by the full second circuit "en banc." That request was denied in June. During this period, the "mandate" -- which would start the clock for Trump to go to the Supreme Court-- was suspended. Yesterday, the court finally issued the mandate, accompanied by a copy of the December 30, 2024 opinion.

(157,020 posts)that since the first ruling here -
https://law.justia.com/cases/federal/appellate-courts/ca2/23-793/23-793-2024-12-30.html
was a typical 3-judge panel but then the next request was to do an en banc and had 10 of them there (the majority voted "no" ) -

then they might be considering THAT as the more "definitive" starting point date before the request for a retrial. The retrial reasoning was objecting to the "Access Hollywood" tapes - (per this - https://lawandcrime.com/high-profile/federal-appeals-court-turn-down-trump-request-to-undo-e-jean-carroll-verdict/)

(19,899 posts)But I do believe Trump will further disgrace the "Supreme" Court by begging them to bail him out, and there's AT LEAST a 50-50 chance that they will.

She might want to schedule an armored car to drive it to her deposit bank.

(26,064 posts)It was a measly $10K commission check, but I cashed it at his bank, then deposited it at my bank. Just in case. They probably thought it was drug earnings.
