Immigration Officials Issue New Warning to Green Card Holders

Source: Newsweek

Published Jul 09, 2025 at 9:18 AM EDT | Updated Jul 09, 2025 at 10:21 AM EDT

Green card holders have been warned that federal authorities may revoke their legal status if they have a criminal record and violate immigration laws.

"Under our nation's laws, our government has the authority to revoke your green card if our laws are broken and abused," Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said in a statement on X, formerly Twitter. The agency added that lawful permanent residents arriving at a U.S. port of entry with prior criminal convictions could end up detained ahead of removal proceedings.

Why It Matters

The warning comes amid a widespread immigration crackdown under the Trump administration. President Donald Trump has pledged to remove millions of undocumented immigrants as part of a hardline mass deportation policy, with the White House labeling anyone in the country illegally as a "criminal."

Beyond targeting those without legal status, immigrants with valid visas and green cards have also faced detention under the government's sweeping enforcement operations. Newsweek has reported numerous cases involving green card holders and applicants being caught up in the immigration raids.

Attention Green Card Holders: Having a criminal history does not make you an upstanding lawful permanent resident. Possessing a green card is a privilege, not a right. Under our nation’s laws, our government has the authority to revoke your green card if our laws are broken and abused. In addition to immigration removal proceedings, lawful permanent residents presenting at a U.S. port of entry with previous criminal convictions may be subject to mandatory detention.

breaking traffic laws, people who were accused but never convicted. That’s just a few examples off the top of my head. They are using a not unreasonable law as an excuse to act in a wholly unreasonable way.

not a crime it is a civil offense.

So the matter is just being arrested is enough even if they never had a charge before that arrest,

8. As I see it:

Issue 1: current ICE gestapo has brutally attacked people on suspicion of being an unauthorized immigrant. When forced to give a reason for detention of otherwise legal person, "resisting arrest" is the common charge, regardless of proof to the contrary, regardless of citizenship or not. Aside from the denial of ANY due process, fighting these charges in court is onerous. For a person living hand to mouth, that's a terrible hardship.

Issue 2: people have been arrested for protesting. Some have been swept up for mere incidental involvement or even for simply writing an article supporting a protest. This is nothing less than a denial of First amendment rights.

Issue 3: the administration has directed a shocking number of asylum claims and green card applicants to have their claims and applications to be dismissed without explanation. ICE waits for them to leave the court to arrest them.

Issue 4: (heavily related to 1) ICE confiscates whatever personal property they want to. In a raid on a wrong address, a family's computers, electronics, and cash on hand was seized. And this was a family of citizens! Imagine having your driver's license being seized along with your phone; now how are you supposed to contact anyone to get help with being arrested?

She has nothing criminal here or in China, but that doesn't mean anything.

After four years fighting to get her green card, these assholes are going to find any reason to rescind it and deport her if they so please.

My activity in the local Democratic Party may lead to it as they can use a speeding or jaywalking ticket for reasons to rescind and deport.

If green holders participate in protests or otherwise exercise their First Amendment rights in a way Trump doesn't like, they will have been said to abuse US law.

Justice matters.

And most of the rest of the democratic world also calls that "Human Rights" abuses.

And that's also combines with totally illegal tariffs. If any country wants to impose sales taxes on citizens, there is no reason to issue stupidly aggressive threats in intimidating words that are absolutely irrelevant to the subject of trading, it's none of any foreign country business, only interior markets policy.

The world will keep doing business and trades without the US of A from now on.

Oh, and good luck with selling Treasury Bonds abroad (although not over yet, but heading that way).

16. That was my thought as well.

Given time and money you can defend yourself from allegations of breaking laws. But abusing laws sounds completely subjective - as in you used a law in a way that was legal but I (Trump, ICE, the gov't in general) didn't like, therefore OUT!

It is very hard to defend yourself from other's opinions and I imagine there will be very little process offered to do so.

This sucks. (Unfortunately becoming my daily refrain.)
