US Justice Department scrambles to defend its about-face on release of Epstein files

WASHINGTON, July 8 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump's Justice Department scrambled on Tuesday to answer questions after its leadership concluded there was no evidence to support a number of long-held conspiracy theories about the death of accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein and his alleged clientele.
Conservative influencers from Laura Loomer to Elon Musk have criticized Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel for their findings, which came months after Bondi pledged to reveal major revelations about Epstein, including "a lot of names" and "a lot of flight logs."
"It's sitting on my desk right now to review," Bondi told Fox News in February when she was asked if the Justice Department would be releasing Epstein's client list. On Tuesday at the White House, Bondi walked that comment back, telling reporters that she was referring to the entire Epstein "file" along with other files pertaining to the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. "That's what I meant by that," she said.
She added that the many of the videos in the Epstein investigative file "turned out to be child porn." This material, she added, is "never going to be released. Never going to see the light of day."

(1,237 posts)Remember when they talked about Ghislane Maxxwell's little black book of contacts and phone numbers
https://time.com/6124510/ghislaine-maxwell-trial-little-black-book/
What is the little black book?
According to court filings, the government first obtained the book from Alfredo Rodriguez, an employee of Epsteins from late 2004 to early 2005 who was attempting to sell the book to Brad Edwards, one of the lawyers suing Epstein in 2009 on behalf of alleged victims. Edwards notified the FBI, which set up a sting operation in which the 97 page contact book was given to an undercover agent for $50,000, according to the governments filings in the case.
Most of the contents of Government Exhibit 52 has been redacted from court filings. But in a Nov. 12 filing, federal prosecutors contended that the book contains compelling evidence of Maxwells guilt. The filing alleges that the book includes dozens of pages of contacts, including family and friends of the defendant. Furthermore, the government alleges the book would show Maxwell kept contact information for relevant individuals at trial, including victims.

(14,735 posts)Sure, we have the "Q" type off-the-wall stuff like secret subterranean alien bases in Antarctica and stuff like that. Foster was murdered, hillary feasting on blood of children, etc.
What's remarkable to me is these Epstein conspiracy theories seem to have adherents all across the political spectrum, both left and right.
"Client list" is unsupported. Sure, they have Maxwell's contact list, apparently a "book." Well, I have such a list myself and it, too, contains names of lots of people I've interacted with in one way or another. I don't think anyone would refer to my contact list as anything sordid. I do have some of my professional clients in there such as lawyers, plumbers, etc., as well as people I have interacted in one way or another that I want to remember. The term "client list" in the Epstein conspiracy theory is being used intentionally to conjure up all sorts of sordid scenarios. But it garners clicks, I guess.
"Murdered" is also unsupported. The fact is that almost everyone who knows they'll be facing a public trial involving sex with kids commits suicide, either by their own hand or by cop. David Koresh is just one well-known example. It is no surprise at all that Epstein would kill himself. Why would he want to live knowing what lay ahead for him? Nevertheless, this weaves perfectly into this conspiracy theory because it implies he was "murdered" by people threatened by the infamous "client list." But it garners clicks, I guess.
As for trump's taking advantage of this, well, that's trump. It's what he does. He says things his MAGA base wants to hear, plus it keeps him in the spotlight. The more inflammatory, the better. More clicks.
