IDF defies Netanyahu's plan for 'humanitarian city' in Gaza

Source: The Times (UK)

The Israeli military has refused to carry out a plan to confine hundreds of thousands of people in a new “humanitarian city” in Gaza, after senior officers objected and reservists said it would be a war crime.

In a remarkable stand-off with Binyamin Netanyahu’s government, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) pushed back against a request from the defence ministry to establish a new civilian-only area and move up to 600,000 Palestinians there.

The office of Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, the chief of the general staff, said that the military’s duties did not involve forcibly moving civilians either within or out of the Gaza Strip. He argued the plan was not part of the stated objectives of the war: to destroy Hamas and free the remaining hostages.

The row culminated in a heated exchange between Netanyahu and Zamir during a war cabinet meeting over plans for the future of Gaza.

It shows how monstrous the plan is that even the IDF won't go along with it.

Will it last and who will win is the question. The answer will determine not just the Palestinians' fate, but the face of Israel and its place in a world increasingly revolted by its plans and actions.

It all depends on what Israelis themselves want or are willing to tolerate.

The IDF isn't the same as the far-right maniacs in Netanyahu's coalition? Some things Katz and Ben-Gvir announce are pipe dreams?

As we say on low-response I/P threads: "the silence in response to this post is telling".

4. I am truly shocked by this! I had no idea the IDF wouldn't just blindly follow any orders to hurt Palestinians.

This is encouraging!

But that is a very low bar and an indisputable violation of international law and the Genocide Convention. There is no plausible deniability here, unlike with Human Shields! TM. Following such orders would definitely not be in the interests of the "most moral army in the world".

But I too am shocked and pleasantly surprised! Hope the IDF prevails and I thought I would never say that...

8. I don't think "indisputable" means what you think it means.

BTW, have you read the Genocide Convention past Article 1? Something tells me you didn't.
