Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old state assemblyman, built a significant lead over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who conceded the race. Mr. Cuomo left the door open to running in the general election. . . .

Unless one candidate receives more than 50 percent of first-choice votes in the initial count under the city’s ranked-choice voting system, counting will continue next week.

At a moment when Democrats are searching for an answer to President Trump, Mr. Mamdani ran on an unabashedly progressive agenda, promising to make buses free, freeze the rent on rent-stabilized apartments and raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers. His promise of generational change appears to have resonated with large numbers of voters. . . .

The fall campaign could be unusually competitive. Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, skipped the primary to seek a second term as an independent. Curtis Sliwa, the 2021 Republican nominee, secured his party’s nomination without a primary, and Jim Walden, a lawyer, is running as an independent.

12. I'll throw in a guess... it depends

Cuomo has filed as an independent (he did that prior to May 10). If he runs, he could steal votes from Mamdani -- but he will also likely take from Eric Adams (running as independent) and Sliwa.
If Cuomo doesn't run, then it's a case of how many older Black voters choose a different candidate. I don't know the breakdown of this vote, but polling prior to the election showed Cuomo doing well among older Black voters, and voters age 50-59.
If everything stays as normal Mamdani wins. If Cuomo plays sore loser, then it's a toss up (IMO)
I know very little about Jim Walden (he is likely a nothing running as an independent. But, I've read he has almost a million dollars on hand and could get a lot more from former federal prosecutors that support him). He has a reputation as a 'Good Government' guy. A somewhat deserved one, as well.

500k down the toilet with Mamdrani beating out Cuomo. He's since swapped his support over to Adams, and has been pushing for Cuomo to not run third party and for Sliwa to not run at all. A push in certain MAGA circles to deport Mamdani would fit with his efforts to play kingmaker in this election.
