White House says Iran could produce a nuclear weapon in 'a couple of weeks'

The White House on Thursday stated definitively that Iran could produce a nuclear weapon in "a couple of weeks" once given the go-ahead from Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

"Let's be very clear, Iran has all that it needs to achieve a nuclear weapon," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said at her briefing. "All they need is a decision from the supreme leader to do that."

"And it would take a couple of weeks to complete the production of that weapon, which would, of course, pose an existential threat not just to Israel but to the United States and to the entire world," she continued.

How close Iran is to developing a usable nuclear weapon has been at the center of the Israel-Iran conflict, with continuing debate over the potential "breakout timeline" once the nation has stockpiled enough weapons-grade enriched uranium.

Later the same year showed Netanyahu, told a separate delegation of American politicians that “Iran has the capability now to make one bomb,” adding that alternatively, “they could wait and make several bombs in a year or two.”

In 2012 Netanyahu said in closed talks reported by Israeli media that Iran is just “a few months away” from attaining nuclear capabilities.

So Iran was just 3-5 years away in 1992. Then, 20 (TWENTY!) years later they were just a few months away. Now, another 13 (THIRTEEN!) YEARS! later, and they're just 2 weeks away? Meanwhile, US Intelligence says they are still YEARS away.

I think I could design a workable nuclear weapon in a couple of weeks. I think a really good undergraduate in a good school should be capable of so doing.

The issue is not design, it's materials and cost.

It took tens of thousands of people several years to acquire enough fissionable material of sufficient isotopic composition to make the first nuclear weapon. It took decades upon decades, and hundreds of billions of dollars to make large nuclear arsenals.

Unfortunately, our public has been trained to treat the word "nuclear" as a trigger word to commit huge acts of violence. (I consider the attacks on commercial nuclear power an act of violence, since these attacks kill people by allowing the rising use of fossil fuels.)

This of course not new. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqi human beings were killed by the dishonest use of the trigger word about 20 years ago.
