Supreme Court Halts, For Now, New Deportations Under 18th Century Wartime Law

Source: Huffington Post

The Supreme Court on Saturday blocked, for now, the deportations of any Venezuelans held in northern Texas under an 18th century wartime law.

In a brief order, the court directed the Trump administration not to remove Venezuelans held in the Bluebonnet Detention Center “until further order of this court.”

Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented.

The high court acted in an emergency appeal from the American Civil Liberties Union contending that immigration authorities appeared to be moving to restart removals under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798.

They'll argue that SCOTUS order only applies to those in the Bluebonnet Detention Center in TX.

"If the chief Justice disagrees, then it must be invalid so we can ignore it," or some other such nonsense.

drumpf refuses to be constrained or told what he can't do. He'll concoct the most twisted and convoluted argument to justify his continuing to act with impunity, and his lackeys will all line up and support his bullshit.

He's completely out control, I no longer put anything past him.

We are not at war. The Alien Enemies Act only allows deportation of male citizens of an enemy nation during wartime. Again, we are not at war, and certainly not with any Central American country. Only Congress can declare war. The Trump Regime's use of the Act is pretty weak and not legally sound, in my opinion. Of course Thomas and Alito dissent. They are unprincipled right wingers who would bend and break the law to fit their own radical ideology. The Trump Regime doesn't care about the law either, and only use it to cover their heinous policies. Hopefully this will stick and the policy will be stopped.

instead of slow-walking it and glad the ACLU reacted as fast as they did after Boasberg threw up his hands.

But I expect they will ignore it anyway.
