I just don't get why so many apparently successful people are willing to throw away their reputations and self respect to be in TSF's orbit.

Hockey players do seem to like to golf. Maybe it's a golf-club membership thing in Gretzky's case. Or a hockey announcing job on Fox Sports. (Makes no sense, he'd do much better on Canadian TV.; not sure why he'd want to burn his bridges with his fellow Canadian natives...)

Or more generally, maybe possible MAGA-verse talking head employment opportunities await. Or access to the hordes of morons with open wallets and brain-dead women in "Trump, Grab Here" t-shirts. Or Janet wants closer access to Melania so she can get the name of her plastic surgeon.

As an amateur hockey player myself who happens to be openly gay, my personal experience with NHL players has been very positive. I have had the honor of marching with the Stanley Cup a few times in Chicago in our Pride parade with several NHL players. The mens league teams I have played with have always been supportive as well. Maybe it's just Chicago.

I think they seem to believe their success in sports is merit-based, and therefore all financial success is merit-based and earned by their hard work. (No credit to the good fortune of natural talent or the community investment into the fields/rinks they played on, and at most minimal credit to the instruction and assistance from their coaches...)

Additionally, I wonder if the undue adulation/deference afforded young star athletes may be detrimental to their personal psychological development. (And perhaps similar effects can be seen on child TV stars and heirs to the British crown???)

I can see allowing a little slack to Ovi or other players who have to tread lightly out of concern for friends/relatives back in Russia. But Gretzky, who is, I gather, descended from emigrants from the Ukraine area, buddying up to an apologist for their invader isn't going to set well with anybody.
