'There's a movement bubbling up': Anti-Trump protests planned nationwide Saturday

For weeks, people have gathered on small town street corners, in major cities, state capitols and the nation's capital to express displeasure and disbelief at the way President Donald Trump is running the country. The largest protest by far is expected on Saturday, at hundreds of locations around the country. Nationwide more than 500,000 people have RSVP'd to attend one of 1,000 rallies marches or protests organized by a handful of grassroots groups.
"What April 5 is really about is saying, 'Hey folks, let's all come together in one day and show the power of our voices and ensure our voices are heard about what we're seeing coming out of this administration and to push back on these harms," MoveOn Executive Director Rahna Epting said.
Hunter Dunn, spokesman for one of the groups, called 50501 for 50 states, 50 capitols, one day, said organizers want to bring protests to the people who want to participate, rather than expecting everyone to converge on a handful of large cities. "We want to make that space to have those massive protests, but we also want to make sure that you can walk outside your door and start resisting if that's what you need to do. If that's all you can do, we have a place for you, Dunn said.
Hosting organizations include longstanding groups like Indivisible, Womens March, MoveOn, Working Families Power, and Public Citizen and grassroots groups like 50501 that have formed since Election Day. The Washington, D.C. event, expected to be the largest, starts at noon at the Washington Monument. Organizers said they expect it to be much bigger than the Peoples March that occurred the weekend before Trump's second inauguration. The protests will be livestreamed here.

(4,186 posts)I worry that we have lost big time twice trying to just say "Trump is bad". He is, but it's better policy proposals and showing meaningful empathy for the voters' interests that gets us back in power in 2026 and beyond.
Spineless republicans prioritizing party over country for fear of getting primaried. I do believe we are very close to being in a situation where those who back trump will be primaried.

(52,770 posts)Of course Musk is included but basically everything that the GOP has done is a valid issue to protest. I've seen a lot of signs directed at the Republicans. I'm re-using my anti-tRump signs from 2017. I have them back to back so I people behind me can see my signs, too.
With over 1,000 protests planned this will be one to remember, like The Women's March in 2017. This will be historic.
I've been an activist since 1979 and this is incredible. It has grown so quickly and so large. Many people who have never even been to a protest before are going to this one. There are about 14 protests throughout Europe, too. I think they are underestimating the turnout, from what I've been seeing and reading over the past few weeks.

(535 posts)The reality is that when the protests hit DC (and they will) Trump is fully prepared to order the military to shoot them. I pray to God it doesn't happen but I really believe in my heart it will. The final act of any dictator is to attempt to violently subdue the citizens in order to maintain power. It doesn't matter if the protests are peaceful he will do it anyway. Sadly that will be the tipping point where he is removed from power and everyone who supported him will have more blood on their hands.
I don't mean to be a downer and my prediction does not mean people should not protest, we just need to understand the potential consequences to some of those that protest.

(23,166 posts)Been waiting for someone to put together something. What's happened to America is shameful. We have to crush them at the ballot box, all those ignoramuses who vote out of spite or out of ignorance. Let's show them who America really is and what it stands for. It ain't divisive stories about toothpick or egg prices!

(24,796 posts)It was hot, but there was a little bit of shade and a nice breeze so not boiling hot. There were at least 700 people whe we left at 1pm and the crowd was growing. There were so many cool signs, just about everybody had a home made sign, and some of the people were dressed wildly too. Everyone was very friendly, we had great talks with a number of like minded folks!
Best outfit of the day, a heavy set woman wearing a huge diaper, naked legs and arms, a tiny little bonnett and a mask of his image, only with a pig snout and having a tantrum and she was carrying a rattler that she would wave while making crying or whining sounds. AWESOME~

(913 posts)It was a loud happy event with almost continuous car honking in support. This city is coming around. We had a Democratic mayor for 16 years who died in office last year. and then we elected a black female mayor. Between Indianapolis, South Bend, East Chicago, Gary, Bloomington, Fort Wayne, Evansville, I'm thinking it won't be long before Indiana will be blue for good.

(32 posts)These protests are a waste of time. It turns off the unaffiliated voters and exhausts members of the left that want to actually make a change. Sure, it makes the fired up members of the party feel good, but it does nothing to actually show what the left would do differently, or how government would be better if voters put the democrats back in office.
Furthermore, the spectacle of protest often overshadows any substantive message. Instead of focusing on the specific grievances or proposed solutions, media coverage frequently highlights disruptions, confrontations, or the most extreme elements present. This allows opponents to easily dismiss the entire movement as chaotic or unreasonable, rather than engaging with the underlying issues. Lacking clear, actionable demands that resonate beyond the activist base, these demonstrations become exercises in venting frustration rather than strategic interventions aimed at shifting political power or public opinion in a measurable way.
A more productive path involves channeling that energy into the less glamorous, but ultimately more impactful, work of political change. This means focusing on developing concrete policy proposals that address real-world problems, organizing locally to build durable coalitions, and engaging in sustained efforts to persuade undecided voters through reasoned arguments and demonstrated competence. Investing time in voter registration, supporting strong candidates in primary and general elections, and participating in local government can build the foundation for lasting change far more effectively than episodic bursts of outrage, however cathartic they may feel in the moment.

(150,177 posts)what you describe with this missive -

In fact, some of these groups have been around for awhile (e.g., "Indivisible" ) and have not only focused on registering voters but actually TRAINING those voters on how to run for office (e.g., how to deal with handling candidate petitions, file various candidate paperwork, etc) and are involved in recruitment of candidates. If you don't have the candidates to run (especially those in red or purple districts), then even registering voters becomes meaningless if a GOPer runs uncontested.
Many of the speakers at these events have been Local and National Union leaders and as such, represent thousands and thousands of employees & voters.
