Poll: AOC leads Schumer in head-to-head New York primary matchup by double digits

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Omaha Steve (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: Politico

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is leading Chuck Schumer by double digits in a new head-to-head poll of the 2028 New York primary. The survey by the liberal firm Data for Progress, first shared with POLITICO, found that 55 percent of Democratic likely voters said they supported or leaned toward supporting Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, while 36 percent backed or leaned toward backing Sen. Schumer. Nine percent were undecided.

The poll is the latest sign that Schumer’s standing among the Democratic base has taken a hit since he voted to advance a GOP funding bill last month that avoided a government shutdown. The fact that Data for Progress conducted and released the poll also underscores that liberal organizations are continuing to look for ways to prod Schumer to take a tougher stance against President Donald Trump.

“This poll really does show that Democrats are united in just wanting to stand up, wanting to fight, wanting to see someone taking a stand for them,” said Danielle Deiseroth, executive director of Data for Progress.

Deiseroth added that her firm “has a long tradition of wanting to challenge the status quo of Democratic Party leadership” and released polling in 2021 showing then-Democratic Sen. Kyrsten Sinema was vulnerable to a primary challenge. Sinema later registered as an independent and declined to run for reelection.

by the standards of only 10 years ago. The Overton Window has shifted radically to the right.

Can anybody name any policy AOC pushes heavily that is "radical" to the point of being way too far-out for the average American. I mean, go ask 100 people what they think about these positions without mentioning any politicians' names:

- The wealthiest Americans should pay their fair share of taxes because they have achieved their wealth largely through the stability and support of the American government and military.

- Military-grade assault rifles should be banned, just as they were under Ronald Reagan.

- Women, their doctors and other people they trust should make their decisions about reproduction, not politicians.

- Health care should be a fundamental right for EVERY American, just as it is in nearly every advanced country.

- Americans should not have to pay more for pharmaceuticals than citizens of other countries.

- A public education, free of religious indoctrination should be a universal right.

- The country was founded on religious freedom. People should be able to worship as they choose, but this has no place in our public policy.

THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING RADICAL IN ANYTHING AOC SAYS.

His time as Minority leader under Trump has been ineffectual from the start.

Remember this piece of rousing leadership?

We need nothing less than a fire-breathing warrior because we are up against the most evil political party the United States has ever suffered under in the republican party of 2025.

Schumer is a good man and I hope he does the right thing and does not try to desperately try to cling to power when it is clearly time for change.

I truly do thank Senator Schumer for his long service to our country but everyone deserves the benefits of retirement and enjoy the fruits of their labor.

The days of compromise, bipartisanship and being friendly with GOPer senators are OVAH! So Chuck can fuhghetabout leading ever again if he wants to continue down this path. Not to mention that you can't use the same old playbook for decades.

For example, their final 2024 election poll showed Harris leading in Pennsylvania and Nevada by 2 points and by 1 in Georgia. It also showed Harris trailing Trump by only 1 in Arizona.

Trump won all of those states. His margin in Nevada was 3 points. His margin in Arizona was over 5 points.

The problem, in those cases, is not with the pollster but the person misinterpreting the poll.

“This poll really does show that Democrats are united in just wanting to stand up, wanting to fight, wanting to see someone taking a stand for them,” said Danielle Deiseroth, executive director of Data for Progress.

I'm not sure that it shows Democrats wanting to win elections.

TSF has only been POTUS for 2.5 months. Imagine 4 years of this! Right now polling for 2028 is meaningless. Maybe we have a depression in 2028 or a complete fascist regime.

Many young people view Democrats as octogenarians who are out of touch with their issues. I recently spoke with a high school teacher and asked what his students’ biggest concerns are. The answer was that they are frozen, in that they don’t know what to do. He teaches in a middle to lower economic area. Many students cannot afford college, believe that getting a decent job will be difficult, and say they will never be able to own a home like their parents and may not be able to afford rent. They also believe that government is frozen—doing too little (or now nothing) about climate change, doing nothing about the cost of housing, doing nothing about the cost of tuition, doing nothing about low wages and no job benefits for young workers. They see no good future for themselves, and they will be voters in 1-2 years.

Obviously, this is just one teacher and one school, but the frozen comment surprised me because it is real. The US used to accomplish big things, and Biden did some of that, but now our big accomplishments seem to be technology that robs us of our privacy and social media that misinforms, creates anger and hatred, and divides us. The innovations we do have in biomedical and other research are being dismantled. And is it truly worth billions of taxpayer dollars to fund Musk’s dream of colonizing Mars when we could use that money here on Earth to fund better healthcare? Our priorities are screwed up because the 1% do not want to make the US better, they only want to enrich themselves at our expense.

I don't live in NY but I would vote for her. I wish she was on a presidential ballot. I love her! We need young progressive liberals with backbones. That's just my opinion for what it's worth. I wanted it noted that I'm new here and still staying in lurk mode but I had to sign in when I saw this post. I love it! I'm still in mourning the loss of my loving husband of 41 years and probably will be for some time to come but I use to be real outspoken.

My Husband and I rallied in DC in 1987 for gay rights, women's rights, funding for HIV/AIDS, as well as many other issues. We were among the 1st to see the AIDS Memorial Quilt. Hell, we weren't even allowed to rent a one bedroom apt back then, it was the law here in NC that 2 men couldn't live in a 1 bdrm home and as much as times have change that law is actually still on the books the last I checked a few years ago. I want to see changes, I want to see real leadership, I want better for our younger generation. I hate to say this but honestly, shunning anyone who voted republican, third party or didn't vote at all is just fine by me. As I said, all this is just my opinion for what it's worth, not looking for an argument. Thank you!
