Mayors defend their immigration policies before U.S. House GOP

WASHINGTON Democratic mayors from four major cities Wednesday rejected House Republicans accusations they have resisted President Donald Trumps plans for mass deportations by limiting cooperation with federal immigration officials.
Democratic mayors called by the GOP to a six-hour House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing were Brandon Johnson of Chicago; Mike Johnston of Denver; Eric Adams of New York; and Michelle Wu of Boston.
All four cities have been subjected to Texas Gov. Greg Abbotts initiative to bus migrants without legal status from the southern border to their locales without notice, overwhelming officials.
The hearing on sanctuary cities came as House Republicans gear up to move a bill that would strip federal funding for cities and local governments that do not cooperate with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
