'Guilty': Al Green Welcomes Censure For Disrupting Trump Speech

Source: Huff Post

Mar 5, 2025, 01:51 PM EST

WASHINGTON ― Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) is ready to be reprimanded by his House colleagues for disrupting President Donald Trump’s speech on Tuesday. A Republican introduced a formal censure resolution against Green on Wednesday stating Green’s behavior “disrupted the proceedings of the joint address and was a breach of proper conduct.”

Told of the resolution by HuffPost, Green said, “My response is: guilty.”

Censure has no practical effect beyond being an admonishment from colleagues that goes in the congressional record. It’s not clear how soon the House could vote on the resolution, which would likely be adopted with unanimous Republican support. During Trump’s speech, Green rose from his seat and shouted at Trump that he had no mandate from voters to cut Medicaid, the health care program for low income Americans.

Green, 77, waved his cane at the president and wouldn’t sit down even as Republicans drowned him out with noise, and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) threatened to have him hauled out by the House sergeant-at-arms. “You have no mandate to cut Medicaid!” Green yelled. After a couple minutes, the sergeant-at-arms, the House’s top security office, escorted Green from the chamber.

Al is a class act

Rep Al Green after being removed from Trump speech: "I'll accept the punishment. It's worth it to let people know that there's some of us who are going to stand up" against Trump and his anti-American agenda. And Green added Trump is convicted felon! This is what courage looks like!

3. Just slight note...I'd have gone with something a little edgier than "No mandate."

Slightly edgier. Just a bit. Full kudos though.

Green: I think that on some questions of conscience, you have to be willing to suffer the consequences. And I have said I will. I will suffer whatever the consequences are because I don't believe in the richest country in the world people should be without good health care. I stood up for my constituents then. I'm standing up for them now. I would do it again.

Next time the GOP does their stuff, like Greene and Biebert did during Biden SOTU, censure them as well. Sauce for the goose, sauce for the gander.

did anything ever happen to Joe "You Lie" Wilson who interrupted President Obama? I recall the right praising him extensively. No pearl clutching about breaches in decorum and civility.

there are a couple tools - one (the stronger one) is the "censure" and the other is the "reprimand" - https://history.house.gov/Institution/Discipline/Expulsion-Censure-Reprimand/

The Constitution grants the House broad power to discipline its Members for acts that range from criminal misconduct to violations of internal House Rules. Over the decades, several forms of discipline have evolved in the House. The most severe type of punishment by the House is expulsion, which is followed by censure, and finally reprimand.

In Green's case, he was censured. Back in 2023, when Schiff was still in the House, he was censured for the nonsense of his indicating that 45 was colluding with Russia, etc., associated with the Mueller investigation and first impeachment.

As for Wilson, he was reprimanded - House Votes to Reprimand Rep. Joe Wilson

There was even an old DU2 thread that came up when it was being discussed - https://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x6511894

Dems need to learn that sometimes you just have to actually stand up. Take action because the way its looking doing the right thing is not going bring the awareness that things are that bad, put your asses on the line make some noise. Quit being pussies and expecting the courts to do your job. Do your job.
