The White House on Wednesday announced a one-month tariff exemption for automakers after President Donald Trump spoke a day earlier with heads of General Motors, Ford Motor and Stellantis.Automakers have urged Trump to waive 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada on vehicles that comply with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement’s rules of origin.

“Reciprocal tariffs will still go into effect on April 2, but at the request of the companies associated with USMCA, the president is giving them an exemption for one month so they are not at an economic disadvantage,” Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on behalf of Trump.

Leavitt confirmed the automakers requested the Tuesday call with Trump, who mentioned it during his address to Congress later in the day.

The White House said it granted a one-month delay for tariffs on automakers whose cars comply with USMCA, which was negotiated under Trump’s first term in office.

Shares of those automakers — the three largest U.S. producers of new vehicles were up between 4% and 9% early Wednesday afternoon.

He insisted that the tariffs would make the US auto industry greater than its ever been. So why would he pause it? Because someone must have finally convinced him that he is full of shit and his tariffs would in fact destroy the American auto industry. He is implicitly admitting that he lied and he has no idea how tariffs work....

Parts cross the border (sometimes multiple times) before they get to the automobile manufacturer. If they aren't also exempt the automakers will be paying the higher prices for those parts before they ever get used in their cars.

Like every foreign leader is just waiting to wake up in the morning and see what his highness has decided. This is how he tries to cloud our minds. Will my Medicaid be there , will my job be there, what about my social security, will our plane fly safely tomorrow? He tries to fool with each of us every day! I refuse. I think I’ve had enough. The foreign leaders are sick of it. They will take care of it if those in DC fail! They will not wait forever because it will only get worse. He is messing with the world now!
