Conservatives threaten to tank House budget vote needed to advance Trump agenda

Source: NBC News

Feb. 25, 2025, 11:34 AM EST

WASHINGTON — Speaker Mike Johnson said Tuesday he is plowing forward this week with a vote on House Republicans' multitrillion-dollar budget blueprint, a crucial test for President Donald Trump's legislative agenda. But a band of unruly conservatives is threatening to tank the vote. Wary moderate Republicans appeared to be moving toward supporting the budget resolution after receiving some assurances from Johnson about Medicaid in a future package.

Still, at least four GOP rabble-rousers — Reps. Victoria Spartz of Indiana, Tim Burchett of Tennessee, Warren Davidson of Ohio and Thomas Massie of Kentucky — emerged from a closed-door meeting of House Republicans on Tuesday morning and said they would vote against the budget plan over concerns it doesn't cut spending enough.

"I am not voting for this," Davidson said as he left the meeting. "I'm still a no," Burchett told NBC News, adding that he wouldn't mind a call from Trump. "I'd like to express to him some of my concerns, which is that his tax cuts aren't permanent, the trillions of dollars in debt by our own numbers that we're showing. We talked about reducing the debt — that's what we ran on."

Those four votes could be enough to kill the measure. The GOP's 218-215 House majority means Johnson can afford only a single GOP defection, unless lawmaker absences change the math. He expressed confidence about passing the resolution on Monday, asking a conservative crowd to pray for it.

So the frail hearts can say, oh let's take the first bill, but because theirs is worse.

No elderly thrown into the streets? No disabled or seriously ill told "too bad?" How much worse do these evil, evil people need it to be? Sadly, they will be placated and will end up voting for it.

Trump's proposed all inclusive bill raises the debt by 2 trillion. A fiscal stupidity.

The only significant cuts have to come from popular entitlements, mostly health care. Those are a nonstarter. Political suicide except for the most extremist congressional districts.

If they simply allow the tax cuts to expire it will raise taxes considerably. (4 trillion)

The only saving grace, and I don't like it much, is that they have to put a lot of pork in it for reluctant Democrats. Probably tax cuts aimed at wealthy coastal Dems.

G W Bush started this shit with running up the credit card bill and no on has put the brakes on it in 25 years.

Is this guy (Burchett?) bitching because the Tax Cuts aren't permanent, while ALSO bitching about being trillions of dollars in debt? Man... does he have some major mental and educational issues!

It could be done by simply eliminating Medicare or something. It's actually a very typical perspective of the traditional Republican Party. In our enlightened era we simply do half of it, cut way back on taxes by adding to the debt, been going on 25 years. If we bitch they toss us some Earned Income Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit. We love giving handouts to the poors instead of raising the min wage. Gives tons of jobs to sociology majors who are otherwise unemployable. Secures the votes of the poors. We also get tax breaks for the upper middle class, like SALT, and credits for Teslas.
